Three Bed cottage
This three bedroom self catering cottage is one of our Torquay seaside cottages. As the name suggests it is within a 5 minute walk to the nearest beach.
As the title suggests St Anns cottage is only a short walking distances from the best beaches in Torquay. The nearest beach is a 5 minute walk, which is Oddicombe beach. It can be
reached via Babbacombe Downs which is very picturesque. It consists of pretty lawns and flower borders on top of the cliff overlooking the sea with lovely promenades lined with night lighting.
There are many hotels and restaurants along this stretch all which enjoy amazing sea views. To get to the beach below there are 2 choices. You can either walk down the steep road (which is
fine going down, but obviously more of an effort coming up again) or take the cliff railway. From memory I think the cost of an adult return is just £2.50. The railway was first built in 1926,
but had been discussed since 1890.
A footpath leads from Oddicombe Beach along the coastline and around the corner to Babbacombe Beach. This is a pebble beach where dogs are allowed. There is a very fine restaurant/pub The Cary
Arms on the sea front here, which is also dog friendly. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience and the rooms to rent in the pub are akin to a luxury hotel.
Along the coast a little further, is Meadfoot Beach. This is a family beach with a separate pebble section where dogs are welcome. A road runs along the sea front with a tall sea wall separating the
road from the sea, affording spectacular views for the passing drivers. A word of warning though. There is a section of this beach behind the sea wall that forms a bit of a bay. The sea comes in
very fast here and without warning sunbathers could find themselves cut off from the steps leading to the top of the sea wall. I know as it happened to me and my family. Luckily we were warned by
a passing diver and as it was a calm day we were able to wade to safety only getting our feet and ankles wet.
I would also like to briefly mention Goodrington Sands which is a short drive away. This is a truly lovely beach for families with young children. The sand is very soft and the sea gently shelves
which means you can wade out for a long time before getting out of your depth, so children can play in the water safely.
